Join us for the wood river run!
Saturday marks our 5th Wood River Run! This family-friendly 5K helps to raise funds for two worthy causes: our partners at Friends of the James River Park and the work they do to preserve and protect our favorite playground, and to provide scholarships to our summer camps.
First, this race began in honor of the memory of Christian Wood. Christian was a long-time friend to Passages Adventure Camp. He was a camp counselor, an instructor, and an elite kayaker. He tragically died doing what he loved in the James River. But if you knew him, you knew of his passion for the great outdoors and his enthusiasm for introducing kids to outdoor adventure.
The James River Park System sees over 2,000,000 visitors a year, and at over 600 acres (and growing!) it’s one of the largest areas of urban wilderness in the country. While Richmond’s Parks & Rec department gets funding from the city and the state, Friends of the James River Park steps in to organize volunteer cleanups, create new signage and infrastructure, maintain trails, and more.
To honor Christian’s legacy and commitment, we use our portion of the proceeds to reach out in the community to families who want their kids to experience the joy of adventure in the Park, but may lack the means to send them to Passages. These scholarships will allow them experience the thrill of zip lines, learn about kayaking and water safety, develop the courage to lean over a rock wall, and more. We’ll be able to make them tired and dirty and better people, full of character, brimming with teamwork, and with a bunch of new friends.
The Wood River Run kicks off at 9 AM on Saturday. It will take you through the Park and along the river. It’s great for serious runners, casual joggers, and even folks with strollers and well-behaved (and leashed!) dogs. Join us to run, to cheer, or perhaps buy a commemorative t-shirt to help support the race.
