Takeaways from the 2026 American camp association national conference

Your Director, Arden at the ACA National Conference!

This past February, I had the privilege of attending the American Camp Association’s (ACA) National Conference for the first time. It was an incredible opportunity to immerse myself in a high-level learning environment and connect with fellow industry professionals from across the country.

Admittedly, I arrived with a bit of "first-conference" anxiety. As someone whose professional wardrobe usually consists of quick-dry Columbia shorts and Chacos, I worried about being underdressed. However, that vanished the moment I saw conference staff greeting attendees in tutus and lobster hats. I instantly felt at ease. I realized I was among "my people"—professionals who dedicate their lives to the outdoors and aren't afraid to be goofy if it means creating a better experience for a child.

Over the course of four days, I attended intensive sessions covering everything from marketing strategy and staff retention to specialized topics like insurance policy, risk management in adventure programming, and inclusive practices for neurodivergent campers. I listened to key note speakers recount stories of their times as campers and how their experiences at summer camp shaped who they are today. I learned more than I could possibly put into words about how summer camps all across the country operate, and I made a massive to do list of things I can implement at Passages to make 2026 the best summer yet!

Beyond the workshops, connecting with the ACA Virginia community was immensely rewarding. Having a local network of peers who navigate the same unique challenges of running a camp in our region is a resource that is truly beyond measure.

I expected to leave California feeling more prepared for the summer; I didn't expect to leave feeling this inspired. This career path originally "fell into my lap" after college while I was planning a future in physical therapy. For a while, I wasn't sure if this was my "forever" career. After this week, I feel more certain than ever that this is exactly where I am meant to be. The camp industry is filled with the kindest, most passionate people in the world, and I am honored to be a part of this community as we head into Summer 2026.
