Give The Gift of Adventure

There is something magical about giving a gift that lasts far beyond the holidays, something that shapes confidence, builds resilience, and creates memories your child will carry for a lifetime. This year, skip the trinkets and toys that get forgotten by February. Give your young explorer the chance to step into a summer filled with adventure, challenge, and fun at Passages Adventure Camp.

At Passages, we believe the best gifts are not things. They are experiences that help kids grow into the strongest and happiest versions of themselves. For over 30 years, we have welcomed campers into a world where they can try something new, test their limits in a safe and supportive environment, and discover what they are truly capable of. Whether it is their first time climbing a cliff or their tenth time paddling down the river, Passages gives them a chance to build confidence, independence, leadership skills, and friendships that last all summer and beyond.

With a wide range of programs tailored by age and interest, there is a perfect adventure waiting for every future explorer. Here is a closer look at what each camp offers:
Base Camp (Ages 6–8)

Base Camp is the perfect introduction to the world of Passages for our youngest adventurers. This day camp blends imagination, outdoor play, and physical activity to build confidence and curiosity. Campers spend their days climbing indoors, splashing in water activities, exploring nature, solving team challenges, and getting their first taste of adventure in a supportive and energetic environment. It is the ideal first step for kids who love to stay active and try new things, or who just need a little boost to come out of their shell.

Rock & River (Ages 8–15)

One of our most iconic programs, Rock & River, immerses campers in the best of what our local environment has to offer. From climbing and rappelling to zip lining across the island, navigating waterways, and exploring the James River Park System, each day brings a new challenge. Campers learn technical skills such as paddling and belaying while also strengthening their teamwork and problem-solving abilities. For kids who crave excitement, movement, and a mix of land and water adventures, Rock & River is a dream come true.

Fat Tire Mountain Biking Camp (Ages 10–16)

Perfect for thrill seekers, this camp puts campers on the trails for a week of skill-building and real outdoor adventure. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, participants learn safe riding techniques, gear shifting, braking, trail etiquette, and bike maintenance basics. As their confidence grows, they explore both beginner-friendly and more technical trails. It is a fast-paced and empowering experience that helps riders develop control and courage.

The Blast (Ages 11–15)

True to its name, The Blast is high energy, wildly fun, and packed with variety. This program exposes campers to a wide range of outdoor experiences, including zip-lining, high-ropes course, team games, survival challenges, water activities, exploration, and more. Every day is different, which keeps campers excited and engaged while helping them grow their adaptability, communication skills, and sense of community. The Blast is ideal for kids who want a little of everything but are less interested in rock climbing or kayaking: all the fun of Passages but without the sports.

Wilderness Survival (Ages 12–16)

For campers who dream of going off the grid, this immersive program teaches real and practical survival skills that empower them and stretch their capabilities. Participants learn shelter building, fire-starting methods, navigation, knot-tying, safe tool use, water purification, and thoughtful outdoor stewardship. With hands-on wilderness challenges and team-based problem solving, the week helps campers grow resilience, self-reliance, and a deeper respect for the natural world.

Advanced Kayak (Ages 12–16)

This camp is designed for paddlers who are ready to elevate their kayaking skills to the next level. Campers learn advanced strokes, eddy maneuvers, safety techniques, and how to read more complex water features. With guidance from trained instructors, campers progress safely while having an unforgettable time on the river.

Advanced Climb (Ages 12–16)

For climbers who are ready to push their vertical limits, Advanced Climb dives deeper into technique, rope skills, problem-solving on the wall, and outdoor climbing experiences. Campers learn refined footwork, knot skills, belaying techniques, anchor basics, and how to take their abilities to real rock settings with confidence and competence.

Summit Leadership Camp (Ages 14–15)

Summit Leadership is designed for older campers who are interested in becoming future Passages staff and who are ready to grow not only as adventurers but as leaders. Through advanced outdoor challenges, guided reflection, team initiatives, and meaningful skill building, Summit participants develop communication skills, responsibility, confidence, and a leadership mindset. Many Summit campers later become Passages Junior Counselors, which makes this program both a transformative experience and a stepping stone into future leadership roles.
